This update is long over due but I am so excited to be able to share all God has done in Joshua’s life this past year.
For those of you who may not know Joshua’s story here is a quick background catch-up. We met Joshua while we were traveling to another district to reconnect one of our clients with her young daughter that was being kept from her. On the way there we came across 16 year old Joshua who weighed 41 pounds. He was covered in feces and urine and no longer spoke but clucked like a chicken. We found out his mother died when he was around 5 and his father basically threw him away. We bathed him and got him some clean clothes and he came home with us that day and became apart of our family.
We continued to work with the local officials to reunite Joshua with his family but all attempts were unsuccessful. So we continued to keep Joshua for one year. When Todd moved back to the states in June of 2022 it became too hard for me to care of Joshua and our baby Caleb and another 8 year old we had taken in because I was also trying to raise up our ministry. So we began looking for a home for Joshua that would be able to address his special needs. I was becoming quite hopeless when a lady contacted us with a ministry she is associated with in Uganda and from there connections were made and Joshua found a home.
While Joshua lived with us we were able to teach him how to eat with silverwear, how to dress himself (even though he liked his clothes inside out and backwards!). We worked on helping him relearn how to use the bathroom, though this is an ongoing training. We taught him how to begin speaking the local language again by having people in the home who knew the local language, engage with him. He learned to play with cars and balls and we took him on walks. Best of all Joshua learned how to swim in the swimming pool. He was so scared in the beginning but later loved the water and would comfortably get in a tube and float to the deep end of the pool and just smile and laugh. He loved to splash us! Everyone who met Joshua loved him!!
He is still there today. He continues to grow and learn each day as they care for him and challenge him to go beyond what he can currently do. They continue to help him learn to wash clothes and dishes, he dresses himself and plays soccer. He also attends school and is learning slowly how to write. He helps in the garden and loves to play with the kids and eat. When I return to Uganda end of July I am hoping to be able to see him. He is around 9 hours away from where we stay in Gulu so it isn’t so easy to just pop in for a visit. But hoping to see him soon.
We praise God for his watching over Joshua and providing for him through the hands of those who love and serve God and are willing to sacrifice for others. Thank you to every person who has prayed, given and supported Joshua these past two years. We appreciate your love for Him. The bible says whatever you do for the least of these you do for Him. So thank you.
