“E” Has Given Birth! Welcome Moriah!

We are so excited to announce that our client and friend, “E” has given birth to a healthy baby girl. Her name is Moriah, meaning “Chosen by Jehovah”. It is the mountain where Abraham was called to sacrifice Isaac, also known at the mount of “The Lord shall provide.”

“E” came to us five months pregnant and scared. At just 17 she had so many fears but God showed up and has abundantly provided for this young mother. She chose to give life to her and her child and God is meeting her needs as she trusts in Him.

We recently shared that money has been raised to give her a sewing machine so she can work to provide for her sweet baby girl, Moriah.

I want to share a little about the experience of giving birth in Uganda. The number of women that give birth per day is quite many compared to that of what we are used to. Women will typically labour outside on the sidewalks or in the corridors and hallways. Their families are with them and provide all the need.

In the north, where we live, I cannot speak for the rest of the country, the women must provide everything they need for the birth. The medicines, the towels, plastic to lay on the birthing table. food, drinks, doctors gloves for the doctor who will deliver the child, umbilical cord clamp, and any thing else one might need including sheets for the bed.

They give birth 100 percent natural. No pain medication. Even if they tear they just stitch them up with no pain meds. It is really quite painful sometime to watch the women go through this procedure. I have had to witness this and it is heartbreaking but they are so strong and endure. We have been able to give “E” some pain meds to help with her recovery process. She has been so grateful.

When they are ready to deliver they have birthing tables that they are able to use while delivering the baby. Delivery goes very quickly here. They have a custom where the labouring mother is to drink hot tea all during the labour, they believe this speeds up the labour and delivery time. I didn’t believe them at first, then I witnessed enough births to become a believer of the practice. These women truly push for maybe 10 minutes and the baby is here. It is truly amazing. “E” was no different, little Moriah showed up before the nurses were even ready! “E” did an amazing job.

Once the baby is delivered they are moved to another bed where they can recover for a few hours, yes you read that right, a few hours. They give the newborn their first round of vaccines within a few hours of being born, and if mom and baby are healthy they send them home. There are so many women giving birth that the beds are constantly being needed. So after a few hours “E” went home with Moriah on the back of a motorcycle. They arrived safely at home and are resting up. They are both doing well.

If you would like to send card to “E” please send it to the Spooner address below. I know the greetings, blessings and prayers would mean a lot to her. I will bring the cards back with me in January when I return to Uganda.

I am really so proud of the young woman “E” is. She brings joy to us every time we see her. She is determined and hard working and loves her baby with everything she has. I know God has great plans for both of them!
